Spring Or Fall, Spruce Up Home Decor With Seasonal Looks

One of the great benefits of the 21st century's global outlook is that people are more aware of the differences between what's known as the Global North and the Global South. For instance, spring is bursting forth for countries above the Equator, while south of that imaginary line; autumn is bringing the first hints of chill in the air.

During both of these transitional seasons, Mother Nature redecorates herself in spectacular ways. In springtime new green leaves pop out and flowers poke their pastel-color blooms above the ground at last. In fall, nature crowns herself in brilliant red-gold-orange-russet glory, a harvest fulfilled.

Homeowners often feel moved to change their interior decorating schemes during these seasons. Unfortunately, it's possible to be so intoxicated by the delights of the seasons that decorators outspend their household budgets on home decor. Here are some economical ways to spruce up home decorating according to the season.

* Check out the deep-discount and "dollar" stores. Products found at these economical outlets won't have designer labels on them, but who cares? Plenty of great seasonal decorations can be found here, because even budget-minded product designers like to change with the seasons. It's highly unlikely that you guests will be able to tell at a glance the difference top brand names and the cheapie mart.

* Try decorating with silk flowers and potted plants. Beautiful as they are, cut flowers have a short life. Silks can be stunning in arrangements and are much longer lasting. Meanwhile, potted plants also last longer than cut flowers as long as they're given enough water and sunshine. Naturally use cut flowers if you're blessed with your own flower garden.

* Create your own decor accessories. Anyone who can use a sewing machine can whip up seasonal curtains, pillow covers and other accessories that will liven up the home decor. If sewing isn't your best skill, consider creating a centerpiece for the kitchen table made from seasonal silk flowers. A little imagination will help you create seasonal decor for pennies.

* Try decorating with slipcovers on the furniture. It's true; furniture that's the wrong color for the season can undermine all you may do to liven up your decor. The solution is to find slipcovers in a variety of colors, fabrics and textures that will match your seasonal updates. For spring, light or pastel colors in cotton duck or other lightweight fabric will revitalize dark furniture. For all, think in terms of jewel colors and rich textures such as velvet, suede or brocade. It's possible to find slipcovers in any color, texture and fabric weight.

* Involve the kids in a seasonal makeover. Have them collect rocks or branches of wood that can be cleaned and painted with seasonal colors. Painted branches can adorn tables, mantels or window sills, while painted rocks can serve as paperweights or even doorstops, with the rock is big enough.

* Bring new life to your floor with a new throw rug. There are so many different colors, patterns and styles available; you are sure to find something that brings a new vibe to your space. You can choose a natural look with a natural bamboo rug or go for a colorful look with a pink flokati rug.

* Get some candles in seasonal colors and scents. For spring, pastel colors and fragrant florals are perfect. For fall, golden-red colors and scents such as pumpkin, evergreen and bayberry are ideal. These make terrific accents for any shelf or table, and their aromas bring out a sense of the season.

Seasonal decorating doesn't have to cost a lot. Shop around for the best deals and you can deck out your home for the season while sticking to the household budget.
